The ASR unit is one of three helicopter units of the NSRI. The NSRI has 28 Coastal and 2 inshore National Sea Rescue Institute Bases. The NSRI ASR Unit supply highly trained crew to fulfill the Rescue Swimmer position for the SAAF. The ASR standard operating procedures and equipment are based on those of the US Coast Guard. Our Station's Mission, along with the Mission of the National Sea Rescue Institute is To Save Lives on South African Waters The ASR unit is not a close inshore surf life saving unit. It does not patrol the South African coastline every weekend. It is however, a highly trained unit which specializes in large scale aerial rescues, such as the Oceanus disaster or the Mozambique floods of 2004, or smaller medivacs which occur deep offshore, usually in horrendous conditions. The ASR has also been utilised during the periods of severe flooding which have been experienced in the past few years in the coastal areas of South Africa.
